Job Summary

Works with team as a lead to accomplish complex tasks and resolving day to day practical and procedural challenges. Expert in technical knowledge of methods, systems, procedures of the department in relation to the practice of spiritual care. Provides guidance and mentorship to colleagues. Works under general guidance of the Director of Spiritual Care. Regularly leads colleagues in identifying original and resourceful approaches to challenging and unusual work situations. Often handles escalated issues and/or complex situations while collaborating with clinical professionals and management. Oversees projects and shift operations. Provides instructions on new processes, standards, policies, guidelines and regularly supports colleagues in the completion of tasks within clearly defined schedules as set by management. Works with director in managing daily and on-call schedules. Serves as a team lead and professional mentor.

Aims to offer sense of attentiveness and compassion in the midst of suffering and struggles. Provides spiritual and emotional support during illness, injury, crisis, emergencies, and deaths. Assess patients/residents and/or loved ones spiritual resources and wellbeing. Encourages patient/resident and/or loved one to utilize his or her own spiritual and religious coping strategies. Possesses empathy for challenges experienced by patients/residents and/or loved ones in the medical setting.

Comfortable and respectful with diverse populations regardless of age, race, faith tradition, sexual orientation or gender. Establishes and maintains effective working relationships; including collaborating with staff members to develop and provide spiritual support to patients/residents and/or loved ones. Functions effectively in trauma and crisis situations. Complies with the Association of Professional Chaplains Code of Professional Ethics.

Effectively and accurately documents spiritual care visits in the electronic health record. Addresses the spiritual care referrals and consults in a timely manner. Follows departmental policies and procedures. Demonstrates critical thinking skills under adverse situations in order to respond appropriately to patient/residents and/or their loved ones. Understands one's limits and seeks appropriate guidance and assistance when needed to ensure delivery of adequate care. Communicates appropriately and thoroughly with chaplain colleagues about patient/resident care needs. Attends and participates in department meetings.

May be required to serve on call as assigned. Conducts spiritual care services and duties including but not limited to: worship services, baptisms, communion, etc. Exhibits initiative with events, projects, and/or departmental goals. Serves to support and mentor to colleagues, chaplain interns and chaplain residents. When requested, provides spiritual leadership at organizational events such as memorial services, dedications and public events. Possesses awareness of personal biases and demonstrates the ability to set them aside while working with patients/residents and loved ones/families and staff members.

Department Details

Lead Chaplain will be working with a dynamic team of 8 chaplains along with CPE residents and interns. The Lead Chaplain will work in day to day activities, mentorship and projects with the team and Director of Spiritual Care.


Master’s degree or above required. Four Clinical Pastoral Education (CPE) units required. (One Unit = 400 hours, 300 clinical ministry, 100 group experience under supervision of certified supervisor of CPE program.)

Ordained, licensed, or commissioned to function in a religious vocation by an appropriate religious authority required and obtains letter of endorsement or letter of good standing from their faith group.

Must meet all of the following criteria:

  • Minimum of four units of Clinical Pastoral Education (CPE) required.

  • Board Certification by Association of Professional Chaplains or other cognate group or certification eligible, obtaining certification within two years of hire.

  • Clinical experience as a Chaplain in a medical or healthcare setting for minimum of three consecutive years in full time status.
