JOB SUMMARY

Oversee animal research facilities operation, budget and staff, to provide animal research service to Sanford Research investigators and staff. Will provide strong leadership and vision in planning, policy, and oversight of Sanford Research animal use program to include; financial management; actively seek extramural funding to enhance program resources; administration of programs at all sites covered under the Sanford Research public health services (PHS) assurance; provide guidance and expertise in facility design and construction for future expansion of research lab; direct the Sanford Research animal care and use program to achieve and maintain institutional accreditation from the Association for Assessment and Accreditation of Laboratory Animal Care International. Participates in the Sanford Research intermediate bulk container (IBC), institutional animal care and use committee (IACUC), Radiation Safety and Environmental Health and Safety programs as required. Provide necessary support to the IACUC, faculty, students, and staff to assure compliance with applicable laws and regulations concerning the use of animals in instructional and research activities. Provide protocol review consultation and review of all IACUC applications. Oversee the programs for staff, research investigators, physicians, and IACUC members to provide training through formal and informal programs to teach techniques and procedures of modern animal care and technology. Provide a working environment that promotes employee job satisfaction, safety and career development for staff and a high level of customer service for research investigators and staff. Utilize resources (personnel, space, and equipment) in a manner that will assure a high quality laboratory animal care program that promotes the retention and recruitment of a high caliber faculty to Sanford Research. Work with research investigators and staff to formulate policies, procedures and standard operating procedures (SOPs) that comply with all federal, state and local regulations and meet research investigator needs.Oversee the veterinary medical care of all research animals to include providing clinical care, procuring contractual veterinary care provided by a laboratory animal veterinarian, and ensure objectives of the veterinary care program are fulfilled. Provide services, expertise and guidance on all matters related to animal care and use to all research investigators and staff

POSITION RESPONSIBILITIES

Prefer candidate with:

  1. AALAS Laboratory Animal Technologist (LATG) certification

  2. AALAS Certified Manager of Animal Resources (CMAR) certification

  3. Experience with surgery and anesthesia on USDA covered species and rodents

  4. Experience with operation and troubleshooting of anesthesia machines, laparoscopy towers, ultrasound, and other imaging/surgery support devices

  5. Experience with preparation of SOPs and program documents for AAALAC accreditation

Sanford Research is a multi-site institution and occasional local travel between sites may be required.

QUALIFICATIONS

Bachelor's degree required in a science or related field plus 5 years of experience. A Masters degree with scientific experience is preferred.
